What are magnets?

A simple definition would be that a magnet is anything that has a static magnetic field around it. One of the most common magnets are the Alnico magnets. These were once the strongest type of permanent magnets before the development of rare-earth magnets. Alnico stands for Aluminum (Al), Nickle (Ni), & Cobalt (Co) which are the major elements used to make it. Rare-earth magnets are made from alloys of rare-earth elements. There are currently two types of rare-earth magnets: Neodymimum Iron Boron (NdFeB) and Samarium Colbalt (SmCo). These two are the strongest type of permanent magnets currently available.

Why are magnets essential?

We may not realize it, but magnets are very common in everyday applications. One of the most common uses of magnets I can think of would be speakers. Most speakers have a permanent magnet and an electromagnet that are used in generating sound. From speakers all the way to magnetic trains, magnets are essential to our lives.

What does the future hold for magnets?

Magnets were first talked of thousands of years ago and they will continue to be talked about in the future. Many new inventions like hoverboards and self-driving cars will depend on them. In 2014, Volvo announced that they completed a research project which shows the advantages of having magnetic sensors in our roads. Like all emerging technologies, once the products become commercialized, it will become another household item for us.
